  15. SYMPTOMS
  16. ========

  18. You receive an application error from SPOOLSS.EXE when reinstalling
  19. the data link control (DLC) protocol.
  20.  
  21. CAUSE
  22. =====
  23.  
  24. This error may occur because you still have a printer set up in Print
  25. Manager that is printing to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) network port.
  26.  
  27. RESOLUTION
  28. ==========
  29.  
  30. To recover from the application error, do the following:
  31.  
  32. 1. Choose the End Task button in Task Manager to exit Control Panel.
  33.  
  34. 2. After exiting Control Panel, the DLC Setup task will appear in Task
  35.    Manager. Choose End Task to exit this as well.
  36.  
  37. 3. Run Control Panel and choose the Network icon. In the list of
  38.    installed protocols, select DLC and choose Remove (because the
  39.    installation was only partially successful).
  40.  
  41. 4. Exit Control Panel, but do not restart the system yet.
  42.  
  43. 5. Start Print Manager and remove the printer that is on the HP
  44.    network port.
  45.  
  46. 6. Restart the system.
  47.  
  48. 7. Run Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE).
  49.  
  50. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause
  51.      serious, system-wide problems that may require you to
  52.      reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot
  53.      guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
  54.      Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own
  55.      risk.

  58. 8. Within Registry Editor select the following key
  59.  
  60.      \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
  61.  
  62.    and remove the following key and all of its subkeys:
  63.  
  64.      \Hewlett-Packard Network Port
  65.  
  66. 8. Restart the computer.
  67.  
  68. 9. Run Control Panel and choose the Networks icon. Reinstall DLC.
  69.  
  70. If you have removed DLC without removing the printer but have not yet
  71. tried to reinstall the protocol, start at step 5.

  73. MORE INFORMATION

  76. If DLC is currently installed on your system and you have a printer
  77. that is using the protocol to print to an HP network port, to safely
  78. remove the protocol you must first either remove the printer or change
  79. its settings so it no longer prints to the HP network port. Removing
  80. the protocol without removing or changing the printer port will not
  81. immediately cause any errors, and the printer will still appear in
  82. Print Manager. However, any attempt to reinstall the protocol will
  83. give an application error from SPOOLSS.EXE and cause Control Panel to
  84. hang, resulting in a partially installed protocol.
  85.  
  86. Once you have removed the protocol, removing the printer will not
  87. allow you to reinstall DLC without receiving an application error. The
  88. error occurs because there are still references in the Registry to the
  89. HP network port that were not removed when the protocol was removed.
